Parables of the Qur’an – Part II
Episode 8
In the name of Allah, The All-Merciful, The Ever-Merciful. All Prayers and Peace of Allah be upon our master, the most noble Prophet Muhammad (SAWS).
After Prophet Musa (AS) (Moses) brought the water from the well for the two girls, he went to sit under the shade of a tree next to that well. We can imagine how he feels at these moments; he is so lonely, yet, he is a beloved person to Allah.
As Musa was sitting alone under the tree, his soul and heart were with his creator. He started asking help from Allah (SWT), telling him that he is a poor man needs Allah's help.
Let us try to get closer to him and feel what he feels. We know that he used to make du'aa (supplication) to Allah (SWT) all the time and in all situations. Allah accepted his prayers and made all his wishes came true. Dua'a is a very important thing, we all have to stick to it, for Allah never let the believers down. It is wrong to say, like Israelites, that Allah knows our need and request so we don't have to make du'aa. Allah wants to hear our voices praying and supplicating him.
When Musa wanted to ask Allah's help, he began his du'aa by mentioning Allah's blessings on him. Thus, the best du'aa comes after showing humbleness and admitting Allah's blessings.
Straightaway after his prayer, the girl came to tell him about her father's invitation. Musa (AS) knew then, that Allah accepted his prayer as a reward for his nobility with the girl and would provide him with food, shelter, stability and marriage as well.
There is a law, which is called "The law of rebounding". It means that every good deed we do pays off. If we pay money for charity, we get them back doubled. If we help someone, Allah will send another to help us, and so on.
When the two girls returned home early, their father inquired about that so they told him the story of the thirty years old man who brought them water free and without too much talking. The old man was so intelligent and knowledgeable. He knew that such a man as Musa is a good man, and deserves to be paid back. One of the two girls came to Musa walking shyly and told him that her father wanted to pay him back for what he did for them. The Qur'an used the word "shyness" in such a way to emphasize how shy the girl was. Shyness is an essential trait in any girl.
That invitation assured to Musa that they were generous people just like him, so he decided to go with her. He was a flexible man and could deal with his new situation as a stranger, lonely man.
Musa (AS) told the old man his story with the Israelites and the man that he had killed by mistake. The old man told him one thing; he told him that he is saved from the tyrants, which was the last du'aa Musa had made. He asked Allah (SWT) to save him from the tyrants so Allah informed him that his du'aa was accepted.
So, Musa's du'aa was accepted. We too, should keep making du'aa and you will see that it would pay off, according to "the law of rebounding", every good deed will return to us. Only a few minutes that separate between suffering and welfare. We see Musa here was a stranger, homeless and just after his talking with the girl, everything changed and all problems solved. Pharaoh- the king- was following Musa and his people and after minutes the sea was split into two parts and they were saved whereas Pharaoh drowned. We only have to trust in our creator who will never let us down.
Musa lived in "Madyan" with that family- which became his later- for ten years from the age thirty to forty. The old man became a friend of him and married his daughter. She was a girl of a strong personality, intelligent, polite and shy. She was the one who suggested hiring Musa to work for her father as a shepherd. If any other man now is in the prophet Musa's (AS) situation, he would have never accepted such offer. But Musa (AS) was a realistic and flexible man. He was content about what Allah Has ordained.
During Musa's (AS) life, he dealt with many different kinds of people: palaces' residents, desert residents and poor Israelites. He learned many languages. Thus, he gained a great deal of experience, which kept him from being a racist.
Here we should refer to "meditation" as a great kind of worship. It was practiced by all the prophets for years to be able to carry their messages and deliver them to the humanity. Muhammad (SAWS) practiced meditation in cave of mount Hira' for years before revelation. Musa (AS) also practiced it for ten years. All the experiences Musa (AS) has gained helped him a lot in his later life. He lived in the city as a prince where science and culture were prevalent. Then he lived in the desert as a shepherd, which helped him in meditation. Again, this combination helped him a great deal in his mission. Although Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) is the best of all messengers and more beloved to Allah, yet he ordered us not to prefer him to Musa (AS). This indicates the humbleness of the Prophet (SAWS) and the value of Musa (AS).
Back to our story, as the old man saw his daughter praising Musa, he thought of offering him to marry his daughter in return for 8 years, in which Musa should work for the father. He told Musa too that he could make them ten if he wishes. Musa hadn't been married at the time, so he accepted. He was destined to marry an Arab woman and this is the greatest evidence for being so far from racism.
We can imagine Musa's life as a shepherd for ten years. He went through a lot. It taught him patience, and thus he became the master of humanity at his time. The lesson we should learn today is that one should go through a lot to be eligible to lead their nations. Moreover, life is not stable. Musa (AS), for example was a prince one day, and the next day he became a shepherd. However, he didn’t lose his patience during hard times. To the contrary, he showed a great deal of content and gratefulness to Allah (SWT), and this is how we all should be.
